Baby Shower Theme Detective

It was a wee bit difficult, but we did find this party pack that will be just perfect for anyone throwing a Detective Baby Shower:

Invitations

One puzzling way of sending your invitation is to cut it (your invitation) to jigsaw-like pieces, place them in an envelope, and leave it to your guests to build the puzzle, so as to know the invitation details. You may also place something like, “You are invited to a mysterious baby shower wherein your ability to piece things together is greatly needed” or something like that.

Another creative and puzzling way of writing your invitation is to have the wordings written in inverted order (instead of writing You are invited, you will write something like the example below). If your guest has the makings of a detective, s/he will know that to read this with ease, s/he just needs to read them using a mirror. However, make sure that you also send a non-detective version, for those who have no Nancy Drew or Sherlock Holmes blood in their veins.

Example: detective-text

Tip: You could easily flip the text horizontally in your favorite image editor.

Puzzled, but not interested enough? Here's another invitation idea that might do the trick. We are great fans of invitations that could double-up as something else. Yes, we are talking about cookies that will serve as your “invitation card”, and at the same time, a delicious treat for your friends. You could create little cookies shaped like a question mark or a magnifying glass. Place 5-10 cookies in a bag, with a note tied to its neck. The note will indicate the invitation details, from the dress code, to the place where your baby shower jampacked with mystery and puzzles, will take place.

For dress code, ask your guests to wear clothes that remind them of their favourite detective characters. Make sure that the room where your shower will take place will be pretty cool, since you'll never know how many people will be wearing their capes and coats to your party!

Baby Shower Game Ideas

Need printable games ASAP? Tons of printable baby shower games available here!

Who Am I? (Individual Activity)

The goal of this activity is to guess which guest corresponds to which baby picture. We suggest that when you invite your guests, include a note in the invitation for them to bring one of their baby pictures. It will be better for this game if your guest could bring a black and white photo.

As your guests arrive, collect their baby pictures, and tack them in a board or something similar. Number each of them so as to make the game implementation easier.

It is important for your guests to know the name of the other people in your shower, before they could start guessing. The player with the most number of correct guesses wins the prize.

Tip: This serves as a good getting to know activity, which will be a good start for your party.

Jigsaw Frenzy (Group Activity)

For this activity, divide your guests into groups of at least 3 people. Their goal is to complete a puzzle corresponding to their theme, in the fastest way possible. Since this a baby shower activity, you should choose a jigsaw puzzle that reminds you of babies, babies, and babies!

Here’s the catch. Each group's puzzle pieces should have some foreign or extra pieces coming from a different but somewhat similar puzzle. This should make their puzzle buidling more interesting and challenging.

The group who could complete the puzzle in the shortest time possible wins the game.

Tip: The number of group (and how big each group will be), is dependent on the number of puzzles you have, or how you want to play the game (eg. 3 group at a time, by batch, etc)

Clues Treasure Hunt (Group Activity)

Since this is a baby shower treasure hunt, treasures here will definitely be related to babies. This treasure hunt will be quite interesting because clues of what the item is and where they could look for it, will be given to each of the participant.

Start by dividing your guests into groups of at least 5. Ask one representative per group to pick out their color. The color assigned to them will define which of the clues should they locate.

Hidden in the game area are the items that come in each group’s color. Even the clues are color-coded. The clues and items with their color should be the only thing each group will be interested in.

Only the initial clue will be directly provided to each group. The rest they have to locate, so that finally, they could find all the hidden items that comes in their group's color. The group that could locate the most number of items within the time limit, wins the game. If all groups were able to finish on time, the one who was able to do so within the shortest time, wins the prize.

Tip:

  1. Clues could be description of the item  (eg. Pacifier - Babies suck them) or about where it is located (eg. Bathroom – This is the mother-to-be’s favourite area to relax).

  2. Each group should be hunting for similar treasures. However, the location of where these treasures are hidden, and the order of how treasures are hunted, could be different between each group.

  3. There should be connections between each clue and succeeding clues.

  4. The unearthing of hidden treasures should follow the order assigned to the group. If Group 1 found Treasure 3, before they found Treasure 2, when their order states that Treasure 2 should come before Treasure 3, Treasure 3 will not be counted as their find, unless they find Treasure 2 as well.

Sniff, sniff, sniff (Individual Activity)

You will need at least ten pieces of diapers or any baby clothing for this particular activity. Number each cloth.

The idea is for the participants to guess the item based on their scent. The number of different scents corresponds to the number of diapers or baby clothing articles you have. Put some drops of one scent in a diaper, then the next scent to the next diaper, and so on. Scents could be soy sauce, ketchup, soda, etc.

The participant with most number of correct guesses, and with the shortest guessing time, wins the game.

Count Me (Individual Activity)

This is about the jar or bowl of candies that serves as your centerpiece (you should have read the suggested decorations for this theme to know this).

The idea of this activity is to test your guest’s ability to observe her surroundings, and her ability to guess things correctly. They need to identify what the item in the bowl is, and to give a good guess on how many of those items are inside. They should not be able to see the bowl from their current location, and should just rely on their previous observation and on your vague clues (eg. It's my table centerpiece) to identify the contents and to assess the right count.

The player who was able to guess what the bowl contains, and with the nearest number, wins the prize.
